Beginning their season on the right foot, the Atlanta Silverbacks women won their first game of the season with a 2-0 road victory over the Carolina Elite Cobras in Greenville, S.C. on Sunday.
The first half saw both the Cobras and Silverbacks looking to control the midfield, but the Silverbacks would open the scoring first. In the 17th minute, Silverbacks forward Rachel Garcia slotted the ball past Cobras goalkeeper Rose Hill to give her team a 1-0 lead.
The Cobras would respond by sending a flurry of shots at Silverbacks goalkeeper Jane Campbell and by keeping the pressure up until the break. Campbell dealt well with the Cobras’ attack, preserving the 1-0 score going into the half.
As the second half began, the Cobras attempted to establish a foothold on the match, but their attempts were thwarted as Garcia found the net again to put the game out of reach.
In the 70th minute, Garcia found the net to put the Silverbacks up 2-0 and despite a late surge by the Cobras, the Silverbacks would hold on to gain their first shutout and victory of the W-League season.
The Silverbacks play at home and will be kick off a doubleheader with the men’s team at Atlanta Silverbacks Park this Saturday at 4:30 ET.
