COLUMBUS, Ga. – The Atlanta Silverbacks Women were minutes away from defeating VSI Tampa Bay before Tampa scored the tying goal in the 89th minute to pull out a 1-1 draw at the Walden Soccer Complex on the campus of Columbus State University Saturday night.
The Silverbacks are now 2-0-1 while Tampa Bay improves to 1-1-1.
Both teams were held scoreless through the first half of play as neither team could find many good opportunities to get a shot on goal.
In the second half, the pace picked up on the part of the Silverbacks and in the 69th minute, Rachel Garcia put the ball in the lower right corner of the goal to put the Silverbacks up 1-0. Savannah Jordan was credited with the assist.
The Silverbacks were within a couple of minutes from victory when Tampa’s Stacy Bishop picked up the cross from Mimi Gordon and shot it past the Silverbacks’ defense to knot the game at one.
The Tampa goal was the first blemish on the perfect record of the Silverbacks, but a point was still rewarded to Atlanta for the draw, and the Silverbacks continue to maintain first place in the Southeastern Conference of the W-League, one point ahead of the Carolina Elite Cobras.
Goalkeeper Constance Organ was credited with the draw and is now 0-0-1. She had five saves on eight shots faced.
The Silverbacks will be on the road next Saturday, June 1, as they travel to Queens University Stadium to take on the Charlotte Lady Eagles. Kickoff is slated for 5:30 p.m.
