(Photo by Elaine Carroll) The Silverbacks improved to 4-0 on the young season with a 2-1 victory over the Central SC Cobras on Saturday night at Atlanta Silverbacks Park.

Atlanta controlled the pace of the game throughout, but caught a scare late when Claire Joyce cut the Silverback lead to just one with a Cobras goal with just 10 minutes to play.

Kristin Burton scored what proved to be the game-winner in the 50th minute, after she received an amazing pass from Elizabeth Guess. Burton scorched one by the keeper to give the Silverbacks a 2-0 lead.

The Cobras missed a good chance early in the 12th minute when Debbie Smith’s shot went just wide of the post. Ashley Baker was sprawled out but would not have made the save had the ball been a few inches closer.

After the Silverbacks were awarded their first corner, Nicole Hill ran down the deflection near the midfield line and sent a pretty pass in to Tiffini Turpin, who then finished right over the top of Cobras’ keeper Christina Reuter. The goal was Turpin’s second of the season and it gave the Silverbacks a 1-0 lead heading into the half.

The teams were pretty even at the break. The Silverbacks led in shots 5-4 and had three corners to Central SC’s just one.

The defense was again outstanding for the Silverback women, as Rhonda Brooks, Bailey Powell, Nicole Hill and Kansas Bayly were solid in front of Ashley Baker. Although they allowed their first goal of the season, the defense is at the forefront of the 4-0 start to the 2012 season.

Baker moves her perfect record to 4-0 as well, and has only allowed on goal through the first four games.

The game got more aggressive as time wore on, as two players received yellow cards from the referee. Guess for the Silverbacks and the Cobras’ Tabitha Padgett each were given cautions as the two teams started to heat up.

The Silverbacks (4-0) were awarded six corners and fired 18 shots, while the Cobras (0-3-2) had three corner kicks and shot a total of eight times.

The win moves the Silverback women’s winning streak to 15 games dating back to last season through the championship run.

It was also youth soccer night at the park and cancer awareness night as well as there was a great showing of support for this year’s squad.

Their next game will be Sunday, June 10, at 7:00 PM in Jacksonville, Florida, as they take on the FC Jax Destroyers. The Silverbacks next home game will be Friday, June 15, at 7:00 PM when they welcome in the VSI Tampa Flames to Atlanta Silverbacks Park.
