ATLANTA, Ga. – The Atlanta Silverbacks women’s soccer team is preparing for Round 2 against VSI Tampa Bay at Plant City Stadium in Tampa, Fla. on Saturday afternoon.
Coming into the matchup, the Silverbacks (2-2-1) currently sit in third place with seven points. Carolina Elite is in first with 10 points while Charlotte sits in second with nine. VSI Tampa Bay (1-4-1) sits in last place with four points.
In the first matchup between these two sides in Columbus, Ga., both teams were held scoreless through the first half of play as neither team could find many good opportunities to get a shot on goal.
In the second half, the pace picked up on the part of the Silverbacks and in the 69th minute, Rachel Garcia put the ball in the lower right corner of the goal to put the Silverbacks up 1-0. Savannah Jordan was credited with the assist.
The Silverbacks were within a couple of minutes from victory when Tampa’s Stacy Bishop picked up the cross from Mimi Gordon and shot it past the Silverbacks’ defense to knot the game at one.
VSI Tampa will finish their home schedule in the matchup with the Silverbacks, as this is the third time in a week that they have played in Plant City Stadium. The previous two games saw VSI lose to Charlotte 3-1 and Dayton 2-1 in back-to-back days.
For the Silverbacks to be successful on Saturday and snap the two-game losing streak, the defense will have to step up and stop Bishop and Cara Patterson, who lead the team in minutes and goals, respectively.
Atlanta will look to get back to what worked in the early part of the season and get the ball to Rachel Garcia, who leads the team with three goals. Jordan and Cherie Sayon have two goals each as well.
After Saturday’s game, the Silverbacks will have one more meeting with VSI Tampa Bay at Silverbacks Park on July 12.
Kickoff for Saturday’s matchup in Tampa is slated for 4:00 p.m.
