ATLANTA, Ga. – The Atlanta Silverbacks women’s team tried to mount a comeback late against the Dayton Dutch Lions on Saturday night but fell just short as they fell 3-2 at Silverbacks Park .
The Silverbacks (3-4-2) and Dutch Lions (5-1-3) were scoreless through 13 minutes of play when weather halted play for an hour and 15 minutes before both teams could take the field again.
Dayton struck first and led 1-0 at halftime after Emilie Fillion put the ball in the back of the net.
Dayton added two more early in the second half, one by Fillion and one by Tracy Rymph. All three Dayton goals were assisted: Fillion’s goals by Rymph and Juliana Libertin, and Rymph’s by Libertin as well.
After a Dayton foul in the box, Stacey Balaam hit her second penalty of the season to bring the game back to 3-1.
Shortly after the PK, Cherie Sayon hit her fourth goal of the season to bring the Silverbacks to within one goal.
Dayton was able to hold on late however and earn the tough three points to extend their lead in the Southeastern Conference, clinching the conference title.
The Silverbacks have one more home game on Friday, July 12, at Silverbacks Park against VSI Tampa Bay. Kickoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. in Atlanta. Tickets are available at atlantasilverbacks.com/wleague
