ATLANTA, GA – The Atlanta Silverbacks will take on the league-leading Vancouver Whitecaps this Tuesday, August 5th at Atlanta Silverbacks Park.
The Silverbacks are coming off two straight wins, defeating the Charleston Battery 2-1 and the Rochester Raging Rhinos 4-3 this past week in two of the most exciting matches of the season for Atlanta. Vancouver will hope to recover after a difficult 0-2 loss against the Battery after a five-game unbeaten streak.

Atlanta (7-5-6) will be looking to further solidify itself as a playoff team by creating space in the standings. The Silverbacks currently sit in sixth place, with only the top seven teams making the postseason. Meanwhile, Vancouver (10-5-4) sits atop the USL-1 standings and is looking to lock up the top seed.
Former Silverback and Peachtree City native Omar Jarun will be unavailable to anchor the Whitecaps defense, after picking up his fifth yellow card in the Whitecaps match against Miami. An imposing presence, the 6’5”, 225 pound defender will look have to wait one week until the teams meet again. Vancouver goalkeepers Jay Nolly and Srdjan Djekanovic have logged a collective 0.95 GAA.
Former Whitecap Jason McLaughlin will help lead the Silverback attack on the stingy Vancouver defense. McLaughlin spent the 2006 season with Atlanta before playing with Vancouver last season. The ‘Backs re-signed him in November of 2007.
McLaughlin has tallied five goals on the season thus far and is second on the team only to Macoumba Kandji, who added two goals in the ‘Backs last match against Rochester. ESPN Soccernet featured Kandji in an article this past week, showcasing some of the USL’s young stars. The article is available here. The Silverbacks boast the top offense in the league, scoring an average of 1.56 goals per game.
The Vancouver offense will be led by Eduardo Sebrango, who has scored eight goals on the year and ranks third in the USL First Division. Fueling the offense is crafty midfielder Martin Nash, brother of NBA superstar Steve Nash. Nash leads the team in minutes played (1,658) and is a threat from anywhere on the field.
There will also be six former D.C. United players in the match from Major League Soccer (MLS). From Vancouver, Nicholas Addlery, Justin Moose, and Nolly all spent time with the club. From the Silverbacks, Jerson Monteiro, Ryan McIntosh, and David Hayes have all played with the team as well.
The match will also feature a donation drive for Soccer in the Streets. Please bring any new or gently used soccer items to the match to help underprivileged children in the Atlanta area.
The two clubs will meet again on Sunday, August 10th in Vancouver and again on Wednesday, August 27th in Vancouver.
