The Atlanta Silverbacks today announced the team has agreed to terms with defender Matthew Bobo and forward Jason McLaughlin.
“I’m excited about what these players bring to our roster; Bobo adds much needed depth in the back and McLaughlin is a very versatile player with the ability to play both upfront and in the midfield,” said Jason Smith, head coach of the Silverbacks Men. “Both have the ability to make an immediate impact.”
Matthew Bobo, 6-1, 180, joins the Silverbacks after playing in the USL First Division for five years with Richmond and Milwaukee. Bobo, a graduate of Eastern Illinois University, began his professional career with the Milwaukee Rampage in 2001 and was a member of the 2002 A-League Championship team. In 2003, he transferred to the Richmond Kickers where he was a solid defender and helped the team to the 2005 USL First Division Championship match. Bobo’s successful collegiate career with Eastern Illinois University, was highlighted by his selection to the First-Team All-Midwest in 1998 and his recognition as EIU’s Most Valuable Player. Bobo says he’s excited to come to Atlanta,
“I think that the Silverbacks have a great organization and I'm looking forward to being a part of it.”
Jason McLaughlin, 6-0,180, is beginning his professional career with the Atlanta Silverbacks. The rookie, a product of the University of Alabama-Birmingham, will be an added threat in the Silverbacks’ front line. During his four seasons with the UAB Blazers, McLaughlin was named to the NSCAA All-Region team and the Conference USA All-Tournament team, and led his team to the 2004 championship game of the C-USA tournament. McLaughlin, the Alabama High School Player of the Year in 2000, served a two-year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Japan between his freshman and sophomore seasons at UAB. McLaughlin commented on his first year in the pros,
“I’m really excited to be able to continue playing and take my game to the next level here in Atlanta. It’s a huge added bonus to be playing so close to home and with my former teammate, Tony McManus.”
After a five-game road trip, the Atlanta Silverbacks Men will begin their home season on June 3 at 7:30 against long-time rival, the Charleston Battery. Season tickets are on sale now. Please visit www.atlantasilverbacks.com or contact Kyle Bruton at 404-969-4906 for additional information.
