Silverbacks Wrap Up Opening Week of TrainingSaturday March 22, 2008
ATLANTA—The Silverbacks closed out the first week of preseason training Saturday with an inter-squad scrimmage. "It was a very productive week," said head coach Jason Smith. "It's just a matter of getting everyone comfortable playing together again." The primary focus of Saturday's practice match was to evaluate the newly signed players and take a final look at the eight players on trial. Two trialists will remain with the club for further evaluation next week. "All of our new players have shown extremely well so far," Smith said. The practice match was highlighted by a spectacular overhead volley by newly acquired Ansu Toure. Taken off a cross from the left flank, Toure's unexpected maneuver missed the goal by inches, garnering applause from the media in attendance. Midfielder Mac Kandji participated in the fitness portion of the session but was held out of the scrimmage by the Silverbacks training staff for precautionary reasons after suffering a minor knee injury Friday. The squad will have Easter Sunday off and be back at work Monday morning with a fitness session.
Injury Report Mike Ambersley (knee sprain) two to eight weeks. MRI scheduled on Tuesday. Mac Kandji (knee contusion)—Day to day.
