SILVERBACKS HOST PUERTO RICO - FIREWORKS AND FSC; SILVERBACKS WOMEN HONORED AT HALFTIME

Thursday August 9, 2007

The Atlanta Silverbacks will take on the Puerto Rico Islanders this Friday, August 10 at 8:00 PM in a live national broadcast on the Fox Soccer Channel. In addition to the exciting play on the field between two teams fighting for a spot in the playoffs, fans will be treated to a spectacular fireworks show following the match.

Friday night’s match is the second meeting between the two teams this season – Atlanta came from behind in Puerto Rico to beat the Islanders 3-2. The match Friday against Puerto Rico is extremely important for both teams – the winner will have a solid spot in the top five of the USL First Division and will gain separation from the rest of the pack. Puerto Rico is currently ahead of the Silverbacks by one point, although Atlanta has played one or two games less than most other teams. While Atlanta currently sits in sixth place, the ‘Backs are second in goal differential (+7) with Portland leading the league (+12).

The Silverbacks line-up is expected to see the return of Omar Jarun and Machel Millwood who have been cleared to play after being sidelined by injuries. Another new addition to the ‘Backs is midfielder Macoumba Kandji. Kandji, a 6’4” scoring threat, created all sorts of headaches for the Battery defense last week and tallied a game-high five shots. The speedy 22 year-old from Senegal made his USL debut against Charleston.

Atlanta looks to have a good showing at home before hitting the road for four consecutive games. The ‘Backs will travel all over the country to take on Miami, Carolina, Seattle, and Minnesota before their final home match, another game with Puerto Rico, on September 1.

During halftime this Friday, the Atlanta Silverbacks Women will be honored for their outstanding season. In just their third year, the Silverbacks Women advanced to the W-League Championship match before falling to Washington 3-1.
