The Atlanta Silverbacks Women beat the Richmond Kickers Destiny 4-1 today in Charlotte, NC. Due to inclement weather in Virginia on May 28th, the first meeting between the two teams was abandoned at the 38-minute mark with a 1-1 scoreline. The match resumed from the 38-minute mark in Charlotte this afternoon. The Silverbacks Women put away three goals in today’s play and thus took the 4-1 win over the Kickers.
The win puts the Silverbacks’ postseason fate in their own hands – they can clinch a playoff berth with a win on Friday night against the Fredericksburg Lady Gunners. The Silverbacks will host the Lady Gunners at 7:55 p.m. at RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium in their last home match for the 2007 season.
The top two teams in the W-League’s Atlantic Division will continue on to the Central Conference playoffs next weekend in Minnesota. With only one game remaining for each of the top three teams and just two points separating first place from third place, Atlanta, Richmond, and Charlotte will have to fight to the end to earn a trip to Minnesota. Atlanta (8-2-1, 25 points) sits tied for first place with Richmond (8-2-1, 25 points) while Charlotte (7-2-2, 23 points) is knocking at the door in third place. Although Atlanta is tied with Richmond for first place, the Silverbacks Women own the tie breaker thanks to their two wins over Richmond. Should Atlanta win on Friday night, they will advance to the Central Conference Playoffs as the number one seed of the Atlantic Division and will take on the number two seed of the Midwest Division on Friday, July 27.
