The Atlanta Silverbacks beat the Charleston Battery 3-2 tonight at RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium; the ‘Backs celebrated the win and the Fourth of July with a fireworks show after the match. The win improves the Silverbacks’ record to 5-5-4 for 19 points.
For the second week in a row Daniel Antoniuk started the scoring for the Silverbacks. He took a pass from Warren Ukah, dribbled into the box, and ripped a shot into the net in the 21st minute of play. The Silverbacks doubled their lead just five minutes later when a cross from team captain Rodrigo Rios snuck in the goal after deflecting off a Charleston defender. The Battery would not let the two-goal lead stand and capitalized on a free kick in the 31st minute. Lazo Alavanja took the kick from just a few yards outside the box; he proceeded to place the ball perfectly in the right upper-90, leaving Ryan McIntosh no chance to get to the ball. The Silverbacks remained composed after the goal and continued to challenge Charleston. Just before the end of the half the Silverbacks secured their third goal of the night. Antoniuk chipped the ball over his defender’s foot and dropped it at David Hayes’ feet inside the box; Hayes went one-on-one with the keeper and followed the ball into the back of the net in the 43rd minute. The half ended with the Silverbacks leading 3-1.
Just one minute into the start of the second half, Tony McManus went down after a hard tackle. The referee gave Charleston’s Mike Richardson his second yellow of the match and ejected him, leaving the Silverbacks with a one-man advantage for the remainder of the game. With a two-goal lead and a one-man advantage, the Silverbacks dominated the remainder of the half. Charleston got a goal in under the wire in the 90th minute; McIntosh made the initial save but Aaron King was in perfect position to send the rebound into the net. The Silverbacks held on for the waning minutes and enjoyed the fireworks with a win.
The Silverbacks play again at home on Saturday, July 7 against the league-leading Vancouver Whitecaps. The game kicks off at 7:55 pm, but fans should arrive early to get one of the Silverbacks’ Matt Bobo Bobbleheads that will be given out to the first 300 fans through the stadium gates.
