The Atlanta Silverbacks traveled south on a two-game road trip last weekend and came away with a win against the Puerto Rico Islanders and a loss to Miami FC. With a 3-2-2 record and 11 points, the Silverbacks rank third just below the Vancouver Whitecaps and the Montreal Impact in the USL First Division Standings.
The Silverbacks beat the Puerto Rico Islanders 3-2 on Friday night after being down a goal twice during the match and scoring the game winner in the 88th minute. Rafique Hassim, starting for an injured Machel Millwood, scored the first two goals, and Dayton O’Brien clenched the game with a goal in the final minutes. David Hayes recorded the first assist and Daniel Antoniuk assisted both Hassim and O’Brien in the final two goals of the match. Hassim earned a spot on the USL Team of the Week with his two goals in the game against Puerto Rico.
The heat and humidity caught up to the Silverbacks on Sunday afternoon in the second-leg of the road trip; the ‘Backs lost 2-1 to Miami FC at the Orange Bowl. Antoniuk scored early, giving Atlanta the lead in just the fifth minute, but the Silverbacks couldn’t hold on and Miami scored two goals in the second half.
The Silverbacks will rekindle their biggest rivalry this weekend when they take on the Charleston Battery at Blackbaud Stadium on Saturday night. Watch the game live on www.usllive.com.
PEACHTREE ELEMENTARY JOINS SILVERBACKS’ SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP PROGRAM
The Atlanta Silverbacks announced Peachtree Elementary School as the third school to join the School Partnership Program. The Silverbacks have been working with Peachtree Elementary throughout the spring and today announced the official partnership. Silverbacks players have been present at various Peachtree Elementary events this spring. Tony McManus, Ryan McIntosh, and Felipe Quintero participated in the Junior Achievement Program where the players taught in the classrooms for a week. Angel Rivillo spoke at the PAWS Club reception which honored children who were a part of the club that helps children learn proper etiquette and community service skills. Matt Bobo, Scott Buete, and David Hayes helped out at the school’s field day.
The Silverbacks will continue to work with Peachtree Elementary throughout the upcoming school year in a variety of ways. Aside from visits to the school, the program calls for each school to receive: a Nutrition Assembly designed and presented by Silverbacks staff and players, two complimentary Silverbacks season tickets to be used in auctions or in awards, and the opportunity to participate in School Group Night which can be used as a fundraiser for each respective school.
