The Atlanta Silverbacks opened the 2007 season this past Saturday with a 2-2 tie against the Montreal Impact. The Impact, a perennial power in the USL First Division and the 2006 USL-1 regular season champs, came back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game. The Silverbacks took the 2-0 lead thanks to a pair of goals from newcomer Daniel Antoniuk who earned USL Player of the Week honors for his efforts in the match against his former teammates (Montreal traded Antoniuk to Atlanta during the off-season).
“I definitely had some added motivation since I was playing against my old teammates at Montreal; I counted the days on my calendar leading up to game. It helps to know the team you’re playing against, but I went into the match ready to play my game, regardless of our opponents,” said Antoniuk.
Antoniuk’s first goal came in the 15th minute off a free kick from David Hayes. The second came in the 62nd minute; Rodrigo Rios sent a corner kick into the box, Machel Millwood flicked it on with his head, and Antoniuk collected it and finished it into the back of the net.
The Silverbacks currently sit in sixth place in the USL First Division with a 0-0-1 record; they share the same record with Montreal, Carolina and Charleston. The Minnesota Thunder sits just one point ahead of the Silverbacks in the USL-1 table with two ties and two points.
The Silverbacks will host the Minnesota Thunder this Friday, April 27 at 7:55 pm at RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium. The game will be broadcast live nationally on the Fox Soccer Channel. The Silverbacks will give the first 1,000 fans Silverbacks schedule magnets and everyone in attendance will get to see a spectacular fireworks show following the match.
