The Atlanta Silverbacks announced Keith Jones will serve as the head coach for the Atlanta Silverbacks Women during the 2007 season. Jones, a former professional player in the English Premier League, will use his playing and coaching experience to guide the Silverbacks Women into the franchise’s third season in the USL W-League.
“I’m excited to be coaching at this level and I appreciate the opportunity. I plan to make the most of my time in the next two months to prepare for the season. I’m looking forward to cultivating relationships with the rest of the staff and most importantly, the team,” commented Jones.
In addition to playing at the highest level in England with Charlton Athletic and Chelsea, Jones represented England at the U20 level. After a more than 18-year playing career, Jones made the transition into coaching. He began with the Chelsea FC Academy in London before moving to the United States. While coaching the Silverbacks, Jones will continue his work with the Coweta County Soccer Association.
Jones will be assisted by Tony Anglin who served as the interim head coach for the Silverbacks Women during the 2006 season. Anglin also coaches the Atlanta Silverbacks Reserves. Brian Moore, another newcomer with proven success on the women’s soccer front, will be adding a new element to the women’s staff - player recruitment and development. Moore works with Atlanta Concord Fire as the Director of the South Program.
“We’re obviously excited to have someone with Keith’s extensive playing background and understanding of the game, heading up the women’s program. Tony will be able to give us the knowledge of the players and the teams in the league through the experience he gained last year, while Brian will help the team with his knowledge of developing talent in Georgia and the nation’s top players that call Atlanta home. We hope that this combination of our coaching staff will help the team win the conference title and advance into post-season play,” commented Laura Fedrigo, Executive Director of Atlanta Silverbacks Women.
The Atlanta Silverbacks Women begin their 14-game season on the road in Charlotte, North Carolina on Friday, May 11 against the Charlotte Lady Eagles. Their seven-game home season begins on Friday, June 1 at 7:55 pm in a rematch against the Charlotte Lady Eagles. Season ticket packages for the Atlanta Silverbacks Women range from $56 - $112.
