The Atlanta Silverbacks have been taking time during the off season to continue making a presence around Atlanta and give back to the community. Silverbacks’ players and the mascot Socrates have volunteered their time for various events around the city. The Silverbacks most recently partnered with the Georgia Department of Education and the Georgia Department of Agriculture to promote healthy living to students within Georgia’s public schools as a part of the School Nutrition Program of the Georgia Department of Education. Several Silverbacks volunteered their time to shoot a television commercial, which is currently airing, and also to shoot a print campaign that will be launched later this year. The School Nutrition Program of the Georgia Department of Education reaches students all across the state and teaches the importance of a healthy lifestyle. Matt Bobo, Jason McLaughlin, and Krista Davey traveled to Athens, GA for the 2006 Directors Conference of the county nutrition directors from around the state. The players visited with the directors and discussed the importance of teaching healthy living at a young age.
The Silverbacks have also recently launched a partnership with Horizons Atlanta, a non-profit group that assists children from diverse, low-income families to realize their full potential. The Horizons program runs during the summer and on select Saturdays during the school year. The Silverbacks will be involved in the six-month enrichment program, working with the students on and off the soccer field, acting as positive role models and teaching kids how to be a part of a winning team. The program kicked off on Saturday October 7th and the Silverbacks will head back out to work with the kids on November 4th.
