SILVERBACKS TAKE ON TIMBERS TONIGHT, ATLANTA REMAINS IN PLAYOFF HUNT

Thursday September 7, 2006

The Atlanta Silverbacks, along with three other USL First Division teams, are fighting for the two remaining spots in the 2006 playoffs. Atlanta, Miami, Seattle, and Puerto Rico each control their own playoff destiny and the tight race will continue through the final weekend of the regular season. Atlanta trails the other three teams in points, but with three games remaining, the Silverbacks have a game-in-hand over each team.
The Silverbacks will take on the Portland Timbers tonight at PGE Park in Portland, Oregon at 10:00 pm EST. Portland was eliminated from playoff contention last Thursday with a loss to Montreal. Tonight’s match will be the last for the Timbers, 7-14-6, who will be looking to end the season on a winning note. When the two teams met last season at PGE Park, Portland handed Atlanta a 6-1 loss, their worst of the season. Atlanta will be looking to gain sweet revenge at PGE Park tonight, as well as move another step closer to playoff contention. The teams have met once already this season; the Silverbacks recorded their biggest win so far this year when they beat the Timbers 4-0 in Atlanta. With Portland looking to end on a winning note, and the Silverbacks fighting for playoffs, tonight’s match will be intense.
The Silverbacks will travel to Seattle to take on the Sounders on Saturday night and then on to Vancouver on Sunday to take on the Whitecaps. Visit
