The Atlanta Silverbacks will host the Puerto Rico Islanders this Saturday at 7:30 pm, with hopes of continuing their home dominance at RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium. Last weekend, Atlanta handed the Portland Timbers a 4-0 thrashing, which improved their home record to 6-0-1. Four different Silverbacks scored in that game (including two defenders) – Warren Ukah, Machel Millwood, Omar Jarun, and Adilson DeLima. Jarun earned a spot on the USL Team of the Week for his performance against the Timbers.
The Silverbacks opened the 2006 season against the Islanders. They traveled to Puerto Rico to play two games and left with a loss and a draw. Much has changed since that match. The Silverbacks have not lost during their seven home games and they have found the net far more consistently since the beginning of the season. Saturday’s match should be a great match-up between the Silverbacks and the Islanders. The first 500 fans through the gate will receive the second set of 2006 player cards. Ticket prices range from $12.50 to $25.00 - for more information call 1-866-GO-BACKS.
MEET-AND-GREET FOR SEASON TICKET HOLDERS
Season ticket holders will receive a special treat after the August 4th game against the Toronto Lynx. There will be an exclusive meet-and-greet with the players following the match underneath the white tent; the event will be catered by Sweet Tomatoes. The promotional giveaway items for August 4th are the 2006 Team Posters; season ticket holders are invited to bring their posters and other memorabilia to have signed by the players. Season ticket holders are reminded to wear their black lanyards for the event. For more information, call 404-969-4904 to speak with Laura Fedrigo about the event.
WOMEN END SEASON WITH A WIN
The Atlanta Silverbacks Women ended the 2006 regular season with a 2-0 win last Friday night against the Carolina Dynamo Women. Julie Augustyniak recorded two assists during the game, helping Siobhan Rooney and Mel Schneider score for the ‘Backs. The Silverbacks’ 6-7-1 record was not enough to earn them a spot in the 2006 W-League Playoffs. Sarah Steinmann finished the season as the team’s leading goal scorer with eight goals. Nel Fettig finished the season as the team’s assist leader with five assists.
PDL PLAYS LAST HOME MATCH IN SEARCH OF WILLIE B. CUP TITLE
The Atlanta Silverbacks U23’s will play their last home match this Thursday, July 20th at 7:00 pm. The team will take on the Nashville Metros in the second match of the 2006 Willie B. Cup. The cup originally began when both Nashville and Atlanta competed in the USL First Division; after Nashville left for the PDL ranks, the teams no longer competed for the cup. This season, both organizations agreed to renew the cup that was named after the famous gorilla from the Atlanta Zoo.
The cup is determined by the winner of the series between the two teams; this year, the team’s play three times. The teams met earlier this season and the game ended in a 2-2 tie so this year’s cup will be determined in the final two matches – the Silverbacks play Nashville at home on Thursday and on the road on Saturday. The winner of the Cup will be determined by total points accumulated in the three-game series (3 points for a win, 1 point for a draw). In case of a tie, the Cup will be determined by goal differential in the three matches. If the series is still tied, the team in possession of the Cup will retain it for another year. Tickets to see the final home match of the U23s’ regular season and their quest for the Willie B. Cup cost $5 and are available at the stadium box office. For more information, call 1-866-GO-BACKS.
