SILVERBACKS WIN IN STOPPAGE TIME, 1-0
The Atlanta Silverbacks Men took the lead in the 2007 Southern Derby Cup tonight with a 1-0 win against the Charleston Battery. The Silverbacks pulled out the win with a goal in the 90th minute by newcomer Scott Buete.
“We battled hard defensively and a few heroics in the back kept Charleston from scoring. We made the most of our chance late in the game and finished the ball,” commented Head Coach Jason Smith.
The game seemed certain to be a tie until the Silverbacks began a counterattack in the 90th minute, as Atlanta advanced down the field Jason McLaughlin switched the ball across the field to Buete, Buete cranked a shot that beat the Battery’s keeper and went inside the far post.
Tonight’s match was the first leg of the seventh-annual Southern Derby Cup. The Cup will conclude after next week’s rematch between Atlanta and Charleston, on Friday, June 30 at 7:30 pm. The winner will be determined on aggregate points from the two games; the Silverbacks win tonight gives them a three point lead.
The Silverbacks improved their record to 3-4-3, leaving them just three points shy of the Battery. Next week the Silverbacks will have the chance to not only defend their home undefeated streak, but also edge past Charleston in the First Division table.

WOMEN CRUSH CENTRAL FLORIDA, 4-2
The Atlanta Silverbacks Women had a late start to their match tonight against the Central Florida Krush tonight at RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium, but after a 45-minute delay the home team wasted no time crushing Central Florida, 4-2. Sarah Steinmann added another goal to her scoring total and continues to lead the team in scoring with six goals. Just after lightning lit up the Atlanta sky, the Atlanta Silverbacks Women lit up the field with three goals in the first half.
The Silverbacks hit the ground running, with Melanie Schneider scoring from three yards out in the first minute off a cross from Krista Davey. Fifteen minutes later, Steinmann took a shot from the left corner of the box that beat the Krush goalkeeper far post to put Atlanta up 2-0. Atlanta scored again in the 32nd minute off a Nel Fettig corner; Fettig sent the ball in and connected with Leslie Gaston who headed the ball inside the near post.
The Krush mounted a comeback in the second half, but the Silverbacks extinguished the comeback almost as soon as it started. Central Florida scored two goals within four minutes of each other to cut the lead to one. However, Atlanta again doubled their lead with a goal by Davey just a minute after the Krush’s second; Steinmann beat the Krush defense off the kickoff and laid the ball off to Davey, who dribbled past the keeper and put the ball into the net. The Silverbacks had two chances in the 80th minute to increase their lead, but a superb effort by the Krush goalkeeper prevented both Steinmann and Fettig from scoring.
The Atlanta Silverbacks Women look to continue their run up the table when they host the league-leading Charlotte Lady Eagles Saturday night at RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium.
