SILVERBACKS LOOKING TO ADD TO HOME WINNING STREAK

Thursday June 15, 2006

RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium has been good to the Atlanta Silverbacks so far this season. Since the stadium opened neither team has lost at their new home field. Both teams will have a chance to continue their home winning streak this weekend. The Silverbacks Women will take on an undefeated Richmond Kickers Destiny on Friday night at 7:30 pm. The Silverbacks Men will take on the Vancouver Whitecaps on Saturday night at 7:30 pm.
The Silverbacks Women lost 2-1 to the Destiny earlier in the season; Atlanta will look to even the score with a win and in so doing, break Richmond’s 5-0 winning streak. Their undefeated record puts Richmond tied for points (15) with the Charlotte Lady Eagles at the top of the Central Conference standings. The Silverbacks split the series with the Destiny last year with a 3-2 win at home and a 2-1 loss on the road. Richmond’s Jennifer Parsons, leads the W-League in goals and points with nine and 18 respectively.
Last weekend the Silverbacks beat the Hampton Roads Piranhas 3-0 in Atlanta’s home opener. Melissa Tancredi, Sarah Steinmann, and Nel Fettig scored the Silverbacks’ goals with Melanie Wilson recording the shutout in goal. Wilson’s shutout and nine saves earned her a spot on the W-League Team of the Week. Steinmann’s 11 points on the season place her 7th in the W-League for points (tied with two others). Fettig’s four assists on the season place her 2nd in the W-League for assists (tied with one other).
Tickets for Friday night's game are still available, however, after midnight on Thursday remaining tickets will only be available through the online “print-at-home” option. Tickets will also be available at the stadium box office starting at 5:00 pm on Friday. Please purchase your tickets early! Parking opens at 5:30 pm and the stadium gates open at 6:00 pm. MEN LOOK TO SURF PAST WHITECAPS
The Silverbacks Men, 2-0 at home, will defend their home turf this Saturday night against the USL’s third-ranked team, the Vancouver Whitecaps. Atlanta will have to shutdown Joseph Gjertsen, the point-leader for the USL, who has recorded 11 points in 10 games for Vancouver. This will be the first meeting for the Silverbacks and the Whitecaps this season; last year they split the series with the Silverbacks winning 3-2 at home and losing 4-1 on the road.
Last weekend the Silverbacks beat the USL First Division Champions, the Seattle Sounders 3-1. Jason McLaughlin’s two goals and one assist earned him USL Player of the Week honors. Warren Ukah scored the Silverbacks’ third goal when he headed a cross from McLaughlin into the back of the net.

U23’s TAKE ON TWO UNDEFEATED TEAMS – AUGUSTA, RALEIGH
The Atlanta Silverbacks U23’s will have to end the winning streak of the #1 and # 4 teams in the South Atlantic Division in order to remain undefeated at home. Although it may sound like a daunting task, the Silverbacks have had two full weeks to build chemistry and play together, and with only five teams in the division… one win can turn the tables upside down. The U23’s will have the chance to take the heat out of the Augusta Fireball tonight at 7:00 pm at RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium. Augusta, 5-0-1, tied their first game of the season and won every game thereafter. Augusta’s Frederico Moojen has been a key part of his team’s winning season; he leads the league in goals with eight goals in six games. Tickets for tonight’s match between the U23’s and the Fireball, their first meeting of the year, are $5 at the gate. For more information call 1-866-GO-BACKS.
Atlanta’s John Drummond is tied for sixth place in assists with three so far this season. Tickets for Saturday’s game are $5 at the gate. For more information call 1-866-GO-BACKS.
