The Atlanta Silverbacks Men may have been the first team to score on the Montreal Impact in five games, but Atlanta's lone goal was not enough to pull off a win in Montreal. The Silverbacks fell 4-1 to the Impact tonight (June 14) at Claude Robillard Sports Complex in front of 12,215 fans.
Montreal came out in the 20th minute to score a goal off a free kick by Antonio Ribeiro. Ribeiro sent the ball in and after the ball deflected around in the box, defender Gabriel Gervais collected the ball on the left wing and beat goalkeeper Felipe Quintero with an amazing shot. Montreal turned around two minutes later and scored their second goal when Daniel Antoniuk found the back of the net. After Montreal's two goals in two minutes, the Silverbacks settled down. In the 33rd minute, the Silverbacks answered with their own goal and broke the Impact's 412-minute streak without allowing a goal. In the attack, David Hayes took a free kick from just outside the 18; Scott Buete gathered the ball and beat the Impact's goalkeeper Andrew Weber. The Silverbacks went into the half down 2-1.
The Silverbacks came out in the second half and after outshooting the Impact 6-5 in the first half, the Silverbacks did not finish any more goals and allowed the Impact to put two more in the net. In the 65th minute Montreal brought the ball down the flank, crossed it into the box, and Ribeiro finished Montreal's third goal. Montreal added one more goal in the 90th minute when Mauricio Salles hit a shot past Quintero. Despite being outscored 2-0 in the second half, the Silverbacks had their fair share of chances - the 'Backs missed two one-on-one opportunties. At the end of the night, the Silverbacks and the Impact tied in shots taken (12) but the home team was able to finish their opportunities.
Head coach Jason Smith: "Unfortunately our problems on the road continued tonight and we were unable to finish our chances. We've got to learn to finish our opportunties better and not give up any soft goals."
