WEEKEND PREVIEW - MEN'S HOME OPENER, WOMEN, U23's

Thursday June 1, 2006

The biggest event to date for the Atlanta soccer community has almost arrived – RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium opens this Saturday at 7:30 pm.  The buzz about the new stadium has begun around the city, the state, and the region, and with two days remaining before the home opener tickets are selling fast. Silverbacks’ owner Boris Jerkunica delivered season tickets to Governor Sonny Perdue this morning. Atlanta Silverbacks Park, home to the Silverbacks’ new stadium, is a world-class soccer facility unique to the region. The complex includes the 3,000-seat RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium, two top-quality, full-size satellite fields, and state-of-the-art lighting. Opening day and all the games to follow will be much more than merely a soccer match. In addition to professional soccer, attendees will experience a night full events designed to entertain all types of visitors. Avid soccer fans will watch the excitement of the professional game from only a few feet away, future soccer stars will get an up-close look at their favorite players as they dream about making it to the pro level, and people looking for a great way to start a summer evening will relax and enjoy RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium and all it has to offer. The Silverbacks Men will face off against their longtime rivals, the Charleston Battery at 7:30 pm. The two teams met last weekend in Charleston looking to earn the first bragging rights of the season. However, the game ended in a 0-0 tie, making this weekend’s game even more important for the Silverbacks. Atlanta needs the win not only for the pride in beating a rival, but also to improve upon their 0-3-2 start to the season. U23’s LOOK TO STAY UNDEFEATED AT HOME
The Atlanta Silverbacks U23’s will take on the Palm Beach Pumas tonight at 7:00 pm. The U23’s, 1-1-2, have an undefeated record at home, with a 3-0 win over the Ajax Orlando Prospects and a 1-1 tie against the Cocoa Expos. The Silverbacks newest franchise has had two players named to the USL PDL Team of the Week, Paul Pessina and Damone Priestley. Tickets for the PDL games are $5 at the gate - come out for the 7:00 pm game and get an early glimpse of RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium.

WOMEN HEAD TO VIRGINIA TO CONTINUE WINNING STREAK
The Atlanta Silverbacks Women, 2-0, will travel to Virginia this weekend to play the Hampton Roads Piranhas and the Richmond Kickers Destiny. The Silverbacks Women remain undefeated after two decisive wins against the Carolina Dynamo(4-0) and the Charlotte Lady Eagles (3-0). The win against the Eagles was sweet revenge for the Silverbacks Women - Charlotte beat them twice last season and went on to win the Central Conference. The Silverbacks have had two weeks off, giving them a chance to practice as a team with the entire roster. Atlanta has a 2-0 record against Hampton Roads and a 1-1 record against Richmond.

SILVERBACKS YOUTH HOLD OPEN HOUSE
Just days after holding the first round of tryouts for their new youth club, the Atlanta Silverbacks will hold an open house for all female players about the newest addition to the organization. Laura Fedrigo, Executive Director of the W-League team and girls’ PDP Program, will host the open house at the Silverbacks’ new home, RE/MAX Greater Atlanta Stadium. Fedrigo, who has already experienced one successful new US Club Soccer launch, is very excited about the new program, “I think this will be a new positive opportunity for players and I’m just excited to share my successful experiences thus far,” said Fedrigo.
The meeting is meant to answer any remaining questions, address the exciting future of the club, and give players a tour of the new stadium and the world-class complex at Atlanta Silverbacks Park. Any players interested in joining the Silverbacks’ new elite training club are invited to attend. The meeting will start at 6:00 pm on Sunday, June 4 and last about 30 minutes or until all questions are answered. For more information call 404-969-4900 or email
