MARINERS TOP SILVERBACKS 1-0

Saturday May 6, 2006

The Atlanta Silverbacks Men fell 1-0 to the Virginia Beach Mariners last night. The conditions for last night's game were reminiscent of the team's recent trip to Puerto Rico - heavy, heavy rain. The game kicked off at 8:00 pm and the Silverbacks played the Mariners to a 0-0 tie to halftime, during the second half the Mariners capitalized on  free kick attempts in the final third. Mariners' forward Gregory Simmonds had three free kick attempts on goal - Felipe Quintero saved the first attempt and deflected it off the post (1st half); Simmonds' second attempt went off the crossbar (2nd half); the free kick opportunity for Simmonds proved too much for the Silverbacks and in the 75 minute the Mariners went up 1-0. Although the Silverbacks had some great chances on goal, the team couldn't put the ball in the net to overcome the lead.

Head Coach Jason Smith commented on tonight's game, "Our midfield was a little un-organized tonight. We are going to continue in the direction we are headed and work on getting the midfield better organized.  Virginia Beach had numerous free kick attempts and they were able to put one in the net."
