Kandji, Hayes Garner All-League Honors
Monday October 6, 2008
Atlanta, GA – Despite falling just short of the playoffs this season, two players from the Atlanta Silverbacks were named to the USL First Division’s All-League First Team for their contributions toward the 2008 campaign. Forward Macoumba Kandji and Defender David Hayes captured two of the possible 11 spots on the All-League roster which is selected by the coaches within the league.
“It is a tremendous honor for Mac and Dave to be recognized as top-performers in the league by fellow coaches. I could not be happier for both players.” commented Head Coach Jason Smith.
Macoumba Kandji led the Atlanta Silverback’s offense scoring 11 goals and adding 5 assists for 27 points in league play. Despite playing in only 21 of the possible 30 games in 2008, the Senegalese striker finished the season tied for 3rd in the First Division’s overall point standings. “Mac” was loaned to the New York Red Bulls of Major League Soccer prior to the end of the season and registered an assist in his first game with the team last week.
In a rare occurrence, David Hayes is being honored for the second season in a row. In 2007, he was named the USL’s “Defender of the Year”. This season, David led the Atlanta Silverbacks’ defense from his left-back position. His tremendous ability to get forward and score goals plays a large part in the recognition. He registered 3 goals and 2 assists in the 2,518 minutes logged in 2008.
