The Atlanta Silverbacks fell, 3-0, to the U.S. Under-23 Men’s National Team in a scrimmage at Lipscomb University in Nashville on Sunday night.
The U.S., in Nashville ahead of the CONCACAF Olympic Qualifying Tournament, applied pressure to the Silverbacks defense early on, but didn’t find the net until the 31st minute. Midfielder Brek Shea fired a 18-yard shot past Silverbacks goalkeeper Daniel Illyes to give his team a 1-0 lead.
Silverbacks midfielder Raphael Cox had a chance to equalize 10 minutes later, but his close effort fell wide of the far post.
Just seconds before the halftime whistle was blown, it was Shea again striking for the U.S. The FC Dallas midfielder snuck behind the Silverbacks defense before finishing easily past Illyes to double his team’s advantage.
The U.S. made several changes at halftime, while the Silverbacks introduced defender Willie Hunt and trialist Borfor Carr in place of defender Kohei Matsushita and midfielder Nico Colaluca.
Following an impressive run by midfielder Jared Jeffrey, Michael Stephens added a third for the U.S. midway through the second half. The L.A. Galaxy midfielder poked home a pass from Jeffrey, who had dribbled past a pair of Silverbacks defenders down the right side.
Cox came close to pulling one back for the Silverbacks late in the game, but his high effort was palmed away to safety by U.S. goalkeeper and Atlanta area native Sean Johnson.
The Silverbacks are back home to host Clayton State University on Wednesday at 4:30 p.m. at Atlanta Silverbacks Park. All preseason home games are free to the public.
