In their final home game of the preseason, the Atlanta Silverbacks topped the Clayton State University Lakers, 3-2, Wednesday night at Atlanta Silverbacks Park.
Despite creating several early scoring opportunities, the Silverbacks found themselves behind midway through the first half. Lakers forward Arturo Cruz took advantage of a defensive miscue and curled a shot past Silverbacks trialist Carl Woszczynski, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead.
Shortly after the first-half introduction of new Silverbacks midfielder Danilo Turcios, the home team leveled the score. Forward David Santamaria’s first shot from close range was denied, but his follow-up effort found the roof of the net, evening the score at 1-1.
Following several halftime substitutions, the Silverbacks started putting constant pressure on the Lakers defense. The pressure paid off, with trialist Borfor Carr powering a diving header into the net for a 2-1 lead.
Santamaria added his second goal of the game minutes later after Tony McManus and Shane Moroney were able to combine in the midfield. McManus took advantage of a misplaced pass by the Lakers, and spread the ball wide to Moroney, who placed a low cross into Santamaria for a simple finish.
Forward Jonathan Ray pulled a goal back for the Lakers five minutes before the final whistle, but the Silverbacks stayed strong and held on for the 3-2 win. The win meant the Silverbacks clinched an undefeated home record for the 2012 preseason.
After the win, Silverbacks Head Coach Alex Pineda Chacón commented on the progress of his team during training camp.
"The guys are working extremely hard, and they're committing themselves to getting better each day," Chacón said. "I think we saw some heavy legs in the game today, but that's okay because it shows you how much effort they're putting forth this preseason."
The Silverbacks will continue their preseason on Saturday, taking on Georgia State University and Furman University at GSU Soccer Field at 1:30 p.m. Admission is free.
