Atlanta Silverbacks Owner Boris Jerkunica and his staff kicked off the “Owner’s Challenge” promotion with a victory last Saturday night, topping Estudiantes, 4-2, in extra time at Atlanta Silverbacks Park.
Playing on a rain-drenched field, Jerkunica and his staff team fell behind midway through the first half when an Estudiantes striker lofted a skillful headed finish over the outstretched arms of the Silverbacks goalkeeper.
The staff team quickly pulled one back in the first half, and after a long period without any goals, they added another just a few minutes before the final whistle. Estudiantes answered immediately, though, tying the game at 2-2 in the dying seconds and sending the game into extra time.
Jerkunica’s team had trouble beating the Estudiantes goalkeeper all night, but in extra time, they were able to find the net twice and clinch the victory. It was a hard-fought win for the Silverbacks team, and a more importantly, a fun event for both sides.
“Estudiantes came in and started with a bang. They were clearly in much better shape than us,” Jerkunica said. “But our centuries of experience ended up being too much for them. We are looking forward to our next challenge."
For the challenging team, the game gave their young players a chance to play against and learn from former professional and college players.
“It was just a great experience for our guys to be able to play against the likes of Rodrigo [Rios] and Alex [Pineda Chacón],” said Estudiantes Coach Jason Longshore. “The guys wouldn’t stop talking about how cool it was to play against them and see some of the great things they do on the field.”
Following the game, the Silverbacks hosted their challengers in the concession area for complimentary refreshments and looked back on a fun night at Atlanta Silverbacks Park.
Estudiantes, one of the team’s from local program Soccer in the Streets, chose to purchase the 30 group tickets as part of the game’s wager, but Longshore says the team plans on bringing out more than just 30 fans to the game.
“The wager is part of the Owner’s Challenge, so we’re happy to buy the tickets and support the local team,” said Longshore. “We’ll be bringing that amount, plus many more to a game this season, and we’re really excited about it.”
