The Atlanta Silverbacks fell to Mexican side Irapuato FC, 1-0, in an exhibition match at Atlanta Silverbacks Park Wednesday night.
Mexican soccer legend Cuauhtémoc Blanco headlined the visiting squad, and he played 55 minutes before leaving to a warm reception from an Atlanta crowd that braved cold temperatures for the match.
The Silverbacks controlled the possession and created the majority of the scoring chances throughout the game, but Irapuato scored the decisive goal early in the second half. Forward Ulises Mendivil tapped a shot home from close range in the 48thminute, capping off a nice attack from the visitors.
Irapuato’s goal was threatened several times in the second half, with forward Jon Cox and defender Willie Hunt coming the closest to tallying the equalizer. Irapuato goalkeeper Manuel Corona made several key saves down the stretch to preserve the 1-0 win.
