After a tough road trip to Minnesota last weekend, the Atlanta Silverbacks return home to host FC Edmonton on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Atlanta Silverbacks Park.
The Silverbacks hoped to bounce back this past weekend against Minnesota Stars FC after the two teams played to a dramatic 3-3 draw on April 28 in Atlanta, but the defending champions were too much in Minnesota, blanking the Silverbacks, 2-0.
It was a difficult game for the Silverbacks in more than one way, with midfielders Tony McManus and Borfor Carr receiving red cards, meaning they’ll be unavailable for Silverbacks Head Coach Alex Pineda Chacón this Saturday against FC Edmonton. It was the second time this season that the Silverbacks had multiple players red carded in a game.
Forward Reinaldo Navia, the league’s April Player of the Month, will look to return to his scoring ways this Saturday after being blanked in Minnesota for the first time in four games. With midfielders McManus, Carr, and Nico Colaluca all due to miss this weekend’s game due to suspensions, the Silverbacks will look to the likes of Shane Moroney, Fernando Gonzalez, and Jordan Davis to step up in their absence.
Thanks to a second-half hat trick from forward Shaun Saiko, FC Edmonton made a leap from last to sixth place in the NASL standings, leapfrogging the Silverbacks. FC Edmonton has been on an offensive tear of late, totaling six goals in their last two games after failing to score a single goal in their first three games. This weekend, they’ll return to Atlanta Silverbacks Park where they won a pair of games against the Silverbacks last season.
Saiko leads the way for FC Edmonton as the scorer of four of their six goals this season. The Canadian youth international is joined by an important newcomer this season, goalkeeper Michal Misiewicz, who served as the starter in Canada’s Olympic Qualifying run in March. The 21-year-old goalkeeper has been impressive this season, and will come into Saturday’s game after recording a shutout against the Carolina RailHawks on Sunday.
The Silverbacks and FC Edmonton met four times last year, with the latter winning the first three matchups and the Silverbacks earning a tie in the fourth.
In the offensive third of the field, the Silverbacks will hope to build on their last performance at home. Navia and forward David Santamaria combined for three goals on April 28 against Minnesota, and midfielder Danilo Turcios recorded a pair of assists.
The Silverbacks hope to get their first win of the season out of the way on Saturday, something FC Edmonton just achieved last weekend when they defeated the RailHawks, 3-0, at home.
Saturday’s game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. at Atlanta Silverbacks Park, and tickets are still available. To purchase tickets, visit atlantasilverbacks.com or call 404-969-4900.
