As Father's Day approaches, atlantasilverbacks.com will be running daily stories and interviews featuring different Silverbacks players. The features will highlight the players' relationships with their fathers and the impact their fathers have had on their soccer careers. The first installment is a Q&A with defender Patrick Robertson:
Tell us a little bit about your father and the relationship you have with him.
“My father’s personality would be best described as laid back, honest, and extremely trustworthy. He and I have a very close relationship, and I’d say I talk to him just about every day.”
Do you and your father have a favorite activity that you often do together?
“We always have a lot of fun playing golf together, so I would say that is our favorite. We don’t get to play as often as we probably would like, but every time I go back home to Houston for the offseason, we get out on the course at least a few times.”
Do you have a favorite experience or memory of something you and your father did in the past?
“It’s hard to pick just one, but one that stands out is our family trips to Tybee Island for the Fourth of July. We would take out my uncle’s boat to water ski and tube, and hang out on the beach all day. Those were always my favorite trips!”
How supportive has your father been of your career?
“I would not have been able to continue to play professionally without my parents’ support. I have been truly blessed with amazing parents, and they have helped me get to where I am today. My father has flown out to a few of our games here in Atlanta, and he’s a huge Silverbacks fan.”
How much does it mean to you when your father travels to attend your games?
“It’s always great to have my dad up in the stands. They just drove from Houston to San Antonio for last weekend’s game. I always look most forward to the games I get to see them.”
Did he get you into soccer? How did he influence your career as a player?
“My dad coached me throughout my childhood, all the way up until my senior year of high school. He taught me that dedication and hard work will take me as far as I want to go on and off the field.”
Has your father always been a fan of soccer?
“He actually played soccer at Georgia Southern back in the day, so he has always been a fan of the game.”
How will you be spending Father’s Day this year?
“With my family being in Houston, I will be missing Father’s Day this year. I was at least able to see him in San Antonio this past weekend. A usual Father’s Day for us would be brunch at one of our favorite restaurants back home in The Woodlands.”
