Reserves Stay Hot, Top Revolution
Posted on Wed, May 30, 2012

The Atlanta Silverbacks Reserves continued their winning ways on Saturday night against the Georgia Revolution at Columbus State University, improving their record to 3-0-0. To make the victory even sweeter, the venue attracted a great crowd, including hundreds of youth players sporting their club jerseys after playing earlier that day in the Georgia Soccer State Cup.

Revolution were looking for revenge after losing 1-0 to the Silverbacks professional team in the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on May 22. However, the Reserves came out strong and dominated throughout the game. Both sides tested each other early on, and the Silverbacks’ constant pressure paid off in the 26th minute with a goal from Junior Sandoval, assisted by Nick Burton. Late in the first half, Sebastian Enoch sent a rocket shot from nearly thirty yards out that ricocheted off the crossbar which was then slotted home by Kyunghun Gee, allowing the Reserves to enter the second half with a 2-0 lead.

Both teams continued to pressure throughout the second half, but the Silverbacks maintained their control of the match. The home team’s third goal came from a string of nearly ten passes, finished off by a great assist by Junior Sandoval and was scored by second-half sub Josey Portillo, who has now scored four goals in three games.

The solid defense, anchored by center backs Ryan Roushandel and captain Ramiro Canovas, thwarted the opponent's offense throughout the match, and keeper Carl Woszcynski’s debut for the Silverbacks proved to be a success as he staved off all of Revolution’s shots until the 81st minute. Kwadwo Poku headed home a cross from Jamal Keene to make the score 3-1. The Silverbacks continued to challenge for the remaining minutes, with Jordan Weise looking to answer with a shot on goal in the 86th minute, denied by the keeper. The Silverbacks Reserves came away with a strong 3-1 win to move into first place in the Eastern half of the Southeast Conference of the NPSL.

Longtime rival Chattanooga FC will put the undefeated Silverbacks to the test this weekend. Chattanooga is 2-1-1 thus far in 2012 and sitting atop the Western half of the Southeast Conference. The Silverbacks Reserves will travel to Chattanooga this Saturday, June 2 for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff at Finley Stadium.
